The story behind Allergy Fun:

I am a paediatric counsellor who has two boys with multiple food allergies. Allergy Fun is the coming together of my life with two allergy kids and my desire to see all kids develop into caring, confident and contributing members in our society.

When our first son was diagnosed as being at risk of anaphylaxis to eight out of the top nine allergens, we struggled to find resources to help children with multiple food allergies. Although our lives changed significantly after the initial diagnosis, we have been able to teach our children to be confident, to be resilient, and to understand their food limitations using the ideas encapsulated in this book.

Many of the books we found had children with “just” one allergy. Other allergy books were based on animals and again, each animal only had one allergy. I did not want to include all of our son’s allergies in the book since that would probably be overwhelming for anyone to read! However, having the section called “My Allergy Fun” allows families to really personalize the book and allows children to appreciate their uniqueness, not just in terms of allergies.

The Allergy Fun photobook is a great tool for parents to educate their kids and others on their food allergy. It can also be used for a class group, to increase general understanding of allergies, and to explain why a child might have to eat different foods but is very similar to other children in many ways.

The Allergy Fun story aims to educate young children about their allergies and why they have to avoid certain foods, but also encourages the reader to focus on friends, family, and fun in order to live a full life. The reader meets a young boy who has multiple food allergies. By learning more about him, the reader is able to realize they are not alone and that allergies are a part of their life, but do not define them.
